Y.O.U. holds charity auction tonight

MOSES LAKE - Youth Outdoors Unlimited (YOU) is holding its first fundraiser tonight.

The group plans to give four terminally ill or disabled children a chance to hunt or fish this year. 

It's holding an auction at Sporty's Steakhouse, located at 507 E. Broadway Ave., starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $40.

The group is auctioning about 40 items between live and silent auctions, including a handmade quilt, white-tail deer statue and one-day goose hunt.

"We're having a live and a silent auction," Founder and President Cindy Carpenter said. "We've got some great items. Somebody donated a pig ... We've got two or three fishing trips."

The organization plans to hold two hunting trips and two fishing trips this year. The first child participating is Spencer Kimbro, a 10-year-old boy born seven-and-a-half weeks early with Spina Bifida. He has spent most of his life in and out of the hospital, Robin and Dan Kimbro wrote in the Youth Outdoors Unlimited pamphlet. 

"(Before starting the group,) If I saw a child like Spencer I would tend to be afraid of saying anything, so you don't say anything and these families feel really alienated," Carpenter said. "You start to go there's a way to bridge the gap. I think there's going to be some education and mending."
