BURBANK - A double dose of Kyle Spartveit and Dylan Delay was the right medicine for the Royal Knights in their South Central Athletic Conference (SCAC) East opener Friday night.

Host Columbia-Burbank had no answers for the two runners who scored five touchdowns in the Knights' 32-7 win to kickstart league play with a win.

"It feels good of course and now we're just trying to keep improving," Royal head coach Wiley Allred said. "Burbank was a physical game and both teams played extremely hard. It was good to get things going really well leading 13-0 in the first quarter. Our defense played well and tightened up when they would get down to our side of the field."

Delay scored first with a two-yard run to give Royal (2-1, 1-0) a 7-0 lead. Spartveit would score minutes later on a one-yard plunge and the Knights led 13-0 after the game's first 12 minutes.

In the second quarter Spartveit scored on a two-yard run and Royal led 19-0 going into halftime.

"Our offensive line really did a good job opening up holes for Dylan, Alex (Myrick), and Kyle," Allred said. "We ended up starting two sophomores and two juniors on the line and they did a good job."

Delay, who would score on a 17-yard run in the fourth quarter, finished with 170 yards rushing on 15 carries.

Spartveit ended up with 47 yards on seven carries and 88 yards on three catches. His third quarter touchdown reception from Myrick gave Royal a 25-0 lead.

Myrick, the sophomore quarterback for the Knights, ran for 105 yards on eight carries and ended up 10-for-18 for 143 yards via the air with two interceptions.

Overall, the Knights ended up the night with 384 yards rushing and 527 yards of total offense.

But what might be the most impressive for Royal is their ever-improving defense.

The Knights - who were pounded on the ground by Cashmere two weeks ago - held Columbia-Burbank (2-1, 0-1) to 78 yards on the ground and 186 yards in total yardage.

"I think our kids are comfortable rushing the passer and getting after the quarterback." Allred said. "We are trying to beat them with quickness and speed to the ball. We try to get more and more people to the football and the kids are doing a good job of getting there."

The Royal secondary also put the clamps on Burbank's Dylan Smith.

The state recognized wide receiver was held to two catches for 31 yards, including Burbank's only touchdown, a 29-yard catch hook up with Heath Lawrence in the third quarter.
