MOSES LAKES - Grant County Fire District 5 firefighters will be at grocery stores in Moses Lake on Oct. 2 collecting donations for the Northwest Burn Foundation.

They will be collecting donations and handing out burn prevention information from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Some hand out locations include Walmart, Lep-re-kon, both Taco Bell locations, Penn Plaza, Hastings, Big R Ranch and Home, Tri-State Outfitters and Golden Corral, said Grant County Fire District 5 Captain Travis Svilar.

Funds go toward increasing Northwest Burn Foundation programs, services and an annual summer camp for young burn survivors.

"We feel that it's an honor to do this for the kids. The drive helps burn victims with things their family may not be able to afford and it helps with the research," said Svilar. "We want to get the word out about fire and burn prevention."

Grant County Fire District 5 has been involved in the program since 2004.

Svilar said he hopes other departments will want to have their own boot drive.

"The money collected would stay in the northwest," he said.

Senior citizens and children up to 4 years old are the most affected burn group, according to the Northwest Burn Foundation Web site.

In Washington state, the second leading cause of death of children in that age group is due to scalding. An estimated 2.4 million burn injuries are reported each year.
