BREAST CANCER BRACELETS
Reader supports Othello school’s choice
I just read the article on banned bracelets purportedly supporting breast cancer awareness. How a bracelet stating “I [heart] boobies” does anything to increase breast cancer awareness among high school students is hard to imagine, but the degrading conversations and even sexual harassment that could begin with them is not. Such a slogan goes a long way towards demeaning the female body, and allowing it to be worn in school would signal disrespect towards women, a goal hardly in keeping with forward-thinking education. I applaud the Othello school district and others for not backing down. Respectful language encourages respectful treatment of any important topic, including the human body. And I believe respect for oneself and others is something worth standing up for.
