Darrell LeRoy Dickson

Darrell LeRoy Dickson was born on April 6, 1934 in Jewel City, Kansas to Clifford and Ruth Dickson. He passed away on October 14th, 2010 and will be missed by his family and friends.

At the age of two, the Dickson family fled from the dust bowl and moved to Powell Butte, Oregon. Darrell graduated from Redmond High School in 1952 and soon after graduation served in the Army while stationed in Korea from 1953 to 1955.

On January 11th, 1953 Darrell married his high school sweet heart Donna Michel at the Powell Butte Christian Church where they were both members. While living in Powell Butte, Darrell worked construction for Babler Brothers and was a herdsman for Hudspeth Land and Livestock. He also farmed and helped build several reservoir and hydroelectric dams in Oregon. He raised registered Polled Herefords and was Secretary of the Oregon Polled Hereford Association along with being President of the Powell Butte farmers club.

Darrell and Donna moved to Othello, WA in the spring of 1964 where they purchased their family farm in block 45 and raised their children and registered Herefords. Darrell helped move the old fairgrounds to the current location while serving on the fair board from 1966-1980. He led an active role as a livestock 4-H leader for several years. In 1972 he won the state corn growing contest and was named the 1974 Othello Conservation Farmer of the year. During this time, Darrell custom spread fertilizer for a local company and then later he and Donna started up Bruce Fertilizer. Several years later he worked at Dorsing Seed while keeping busy by helping friends and family with farm work. In Darrell’s later years he was a member of the VFW and Eagles. He has enjoyed fishing and spending time with family and will always be remembered as a kind and loving person.

Darrell is survived by Donna, daughter Susan Grant and husband Bob (Burns, Oregon), son Doug Dickson (Othello) and daughter Norma Uecker (Edgar, Nebraska). He has 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Connie Cole and son Ronnie.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Spokane, WA or Bend, OR Ronald McDonald House or charity of choice. Memorial services will be held at the Othello Nazarene Church on October 19th, 2010 at 11:00AM. Graveside services will be held at a later date in Redmond, Oregon.
