Ron Homer returns to Moses Pointe
MOSES LAKE - Jim Tallman, the former owner of The Steakhouse at Moses Pointe, acquired the business from Infinity Golf Partners, Inc.
With the ownership change, chef Ron Homer and his sister, Dana Homer, returned to the restaurant
Ron continues working as chef and Dana is now the floor supervisor/banquet coordinator.
Ron was the original chef at Moses Pointe for nearly eight years.
He previously worked for Tallman in Gig Harbor.
"Jim has owned quite a few businesses," Ron said. "I worked for him for quite a while."
Ron helped at Moses Pointe during the past transition between owners and left to work at Pillar Rock Grill as a sous-chef.
When Tallman and his son, Larry Tallman, regained control of the business, they asked Ron back to Moses Pointe.
Currently, the restaurant is being cleaned, remodeled and returning to old formats.
They now have new restaurant menus, a children's menu and new banquet menus. Prices are also more affordable.
"We went back to some of the things we did before," Ron explained.
Clients requested certain appetizers, steaks, chicken dishes like chicken tarragon and salads.
"I'm surprised they remember these dishes," he commented. "A lot are from four or five years ago."
"(Customers say), 'Oh yeah, we need this. Oh yeah, we need that,'" he said.
Ron explained that it's his job to chase food fetishes for people.
He's also happy to make items for people that aren't on the menu, if he has the ingredients.
One woman wanted an artisan steak salad that wasn't on the menu, which he prepared.
"I'm really good about stuff like that," Ron commented. "That's the way it's supposed to be and should be."
He also considers what the community wants and needs.
Cooking is an art, but it also has to be a profitable, manageable art.
One has to survive and still make a living.
The restaurant received "really good" local support when he worked there the first time, with between 100 to 120 covers for dinner.
They had a solid reputation for taking care of people.
He admits he survived off the locals who were taking care of him.
The business's former owners made changes to the menu and increased prices, knowing they would lose about 40 percent of their customers, Ron explained.
They were preparing for the many Microsoft employees supposedly moving to Grant County to work at the Quincy data center.
"The perception was that Microsoft was coming over big," he recalled. "They were going in the right direction, but the market never really materialized up here, or with the large numbers everyone was predicting."
Instead, a much smaller number arrived in Grant County to work at the data center.
His sister, Dana, says she's excited to be back.
"It feels like being home again," she commented.
