Othello man killed by truck

OTHELLO -  A truck traveling 60 mph struck and killed a pedestrian crossing state Route 17 Thursday at roughly 6 a.m.

Darrell Dickson, 76, Othello, was crossing state Route 17 when he was struck by a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck six miles south of Othello, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The pickup was driven southbound by Kevin Besel, 58, Othello.

The area where Dickson was crossing was not a designated crosswalk, according to state patrol.

Dickson was reported to live near the scene of the accident and may have been moving garbage out to the curb.

No charges are expected as the state patrol listed the cause of the collision as a pedestrian in the roadway.

The front end of the truck sustained $2,000 worth of damages, according to state patrol.

The accident shut down southbound state Route 17 for a while, said state patrol.
