County fairgrounds hosts bargain hunter paradise

MOSES LAKE — Friends Rene Roman and Judy Gibson were showing off their finds at the Columbia Basin Herald Community Consignment Sale.
Standing outside the 4-H building at the Grant County Fairgrounds, Roman said she attended the weekend event to shop for her grandchildren.
She found a tiny pink sweater for her granddaughter, who will be born next year.
Roman said Gibson bought a whole new wardrobe, including tops and pants.
She even purchased a baby sweater for her first niece. Gibson said she found good deals. Some items only cost $2 or $3 each.
While trying on a white summer dress, Mary Burgess, of Moses Lake, said she thought the event was great.
“I think I should have got here sooner,” Burgess said. “It’s a great idea.”
Vendors Carmen Acevedo and Paty Garza, both of Moses Lake, were seated nearby.
“I think it’s a great place to make some extra money for the holidays,” Acevedo commented.
Shopper Rhea Flores, of Moses Lake, was holding an armful of clothing for herself and her daughter as she waited to pay.
“I had a limit and I think I went over it,” Flores said.
About 30 vendors participated in the two-day event, said Columbia Basin Herald Sales Manager Lynn Garza.
Vendors were “very excited because they’ll be earning some extra cash for Christmas,” and were enjoying friendships between one another, she said.
One woman even canceled her shopping trip to the Tri-Cities to attend the consignment sale.
“There was a line of people just to get in,” Garza said. “The first hour was nonstop with registers and a lot of foot traffic.”
She estimated about 100 people attended the event within the first hour Friday.
