MOSES LAKE — “BBQ’d rib eyes,” “Asian-inspired London broil” and “Home Alone Enchiladas” are just a few of the recipes submitted by Sage Point Elementary students to “Cooking with the Wildcats.”

The first-ever cookbook published by the Sage Point Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO)features more than 200 recipes submitted by students, teachers and parents.

The cookbook is the idea of PTO member Linda Rasmussen, who began thinking about the fund-raiser four years ago and spent all last summer putting the book together.

“We’re a brand-new school and there isn’t money in the budget this year for extra things, so the cookbook seemed like a really good thing,” said Rasmussen.

Funds raised from cookbook sales will go to purchase playground equipment, teacher’s supplies as well as support assemblies and field trips for students.

“This is a collector’s item for a kid as opposed to sending them out to sell candy bars,” said cookbook committee member Jill Skone. “It really comes back to cooking in the kitchen with family.”

The cookbook took three months to be ready for publication.

“It was an incredible amount of work,” said Rasmussen, who re-typed each recipe and organized the cookbooks layout. “We were inundated with cookies, brownies, alfredo sauce and taco soup recipes, but kids really enjoy seeing their teacher’s recipes.”

The recipes vary in complexity and are divided into eight different categories with an index of recipes, napkin-folding protocol and temperature recommendations.

Rasmussen requested five recipes from contributors, then chose the best of each category to avoid repetition.

“There’s some that are really simple and some more involved. There’s a lot of kids’ favorites,” Rasmussen said.

“Everyone’s got their favorite homemade recipe,” said Sage Point principal Noreen Thomas.
