The weekend following Memorial is a big one, with a lot going on. The annual Kids Fish-In day will be held on Saturday, June 5th at the National Fish Hatchery in Leavenworth. Up to 500 kids, that paid their five dollar registration fee, will get a t-shirt and a rod and reel combo for future fishing trips. They will also get to catch two fish that will be cleaned and iced for the trip home. Also on that weekend is a big doings at Hooked on Toys in Wenatchee. Pure Fishing is sending the Berkley Truck and Trailer for the weekend and there will be hourly seminars are their products. At noon on Saturday, Jerrod Gibbons, Upper Columbia Guide Service, will be presenting a seminar on salmon fishing in the region. I understand the folks from Scotty Downriggers will be there, too. You will also be able to check out some great fishing boats from Valley Marine in Yakima. They are bringing some Lund, Duckworth and Weldcraft boats up for the weekend. Dan Allen, owner, and Max Rutger, service manager, will be on hand to answer questions. I will be there on Sunday, from noon till 2 giving a cooking demonstration. I will be preparing my prize winning chili.

I have a lot of folks interested in kokanee fishing this year. It has always been popular, but people are looking at more lakes than usual to try for kokanee. Here is what I have learned about kokanee fishing so far this season. Palmer Lake, which is northwest of Tonasket, is still very good for kokanee. The fish are large and the action is fast. Anglers can expect limits of kokanee of over 15 inches up there. A lake that is known for big kokanee is Billy Clapp, east of Soap Lake. I caught fish that were 18 inches there last year, but not until July. Anglers are trying the fishing here, but results are mixed. I know that anglers have been out on Lake Chelan and kokanee are scarce so far and what is being caught is small, very small. It is early to tell, but we may have a year class of little guys on Chelan. I got a good report on Deep Lake recently. I haven't fished here, but plan to try it soon. According to one of my readers, you can catch bunches of kokanee, but they are running 7 to 9 inches this year. It sounds like it would still be a lot of fun.

The fishing events for kids are not over yet! Coming up on June 12th, at Moses Lake is another Kids Fish-In Day. Get the details by clicking Events for Kids on my web site. June 12th and 13th is also National Free Fishing Weekend, and no one has to have a fishing license to fish that weekend. It is also not necessary to have the Salmon and Steelhead Endorsement Stamp to fish that particular weekend, while on the Columbia River and its tributaries. This is a great opportunity for families to get out and try the sport of fishing, and for those parents that took the kids to the Fish-In days, it's time to get your own rod and reel and see why the kids enjoy fishing so much. On Saturday, June 19th the Icicle Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited is holding their annual derby at Fish Lake. They club will be preparing a great breakfast and there will be a ton of prizes handed out. Again, you can get all the details in the Events for Kids Page on my web site. I hope to have a lot of good fishing experiences to share to give folks an idea about where to go for a great day of fishing.
