Moses Lake track sends lucky 13 onward

RICHLAND — Despite the Moses Lake boys and girls track teams finishing ninth and 10th respectively at Saturday’s Columbia Basin Big 9 District track meet, the Chiefs were still able to send 13 athletes through to next week’s regional meet at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima.

Following their district performance at Rish Stadium, six boys and seven girls have kept their seasons and Moses Lake hopes alive.

The top 11 in each event qualified for regionals.

Moses Lake’s boys scored 32.5 points and were led by the regional qualifying performances of Mitchell Hill (first, triple jump, 43’8” and fifth, long jump, 20’11.5”), Jordan Wilks (tied for seventh, triple jump, 40’8” and ninth, javelin, 155’1”), Dillon Moberg (second, triple jump, 43’1”), Randy Koon (fourth, long jump, 21’0.5”),  and Brian Chamberlain (ninth, 400-meter run, 53.51).

The 4x100-meter relay team of Hill, Wilks, Moberg, and Koon took fifth with a 44-second time to keep their season going.

Eric Hippolyte will go as a potential member of the 4x100-meter relay team.

On the girls side, Moses Lake earned 25 team points and saw  Magie Munoz (second, 400-meters, 1:00.78, eighth, 200-meters, 27.62, 11th, 800-meters, 2:25.14), Jordan Loera (third, triple jump, 34’6”), third, long jump, 16’3”, and seventh, javelin, 107’11”), Sadie Nielsen (seventh, discus, 106’5”), Hannah Marsh (ninth, 1,600-meters, 5:33.01), Kimberly Bakker (10th, long jump, 15’3.5”), Abby Stones (tied for 11th, long jump, 15’2”), and London Cleverly (tied for 11th, 400-meters, 1:03.58).

Ephrata, Quincy teams advance many

ELLENSBURG — With the Class 2A District 5/6 track meet scheduled for this weekend in Ephrata, the Tigers track teams along with Quincy and Othello tuned up at the Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) North Track & Field meet Saturday.

The Ephrata boys team was led by wins from Travis Mather (100-meter run, 10.96, 200-meter run, 23.06), Jerome Prescod (high jump, 6’2” and triple jump, 47’), the 4x100-meter relay team (Mather, Connor Hanna, Oscar Matus, Steven Devine, 43.98), and the 4x400-meter relay team (Michal Hol, Travis Flint, Matus, and Steven Monda, 3:33.49).

Monda took second in the 800-meter run (1:59.16), while Flint did the same in the shot put (43’ 3.25”), and Casey Gingrich ended up runner-up in the pole vault (12’).

Jerome Prescod finished second in the long jump (21’0.5”) and Tyrone Prescod was runner-up in triple jump (42’6”).

Tigers third place finishers include, Hol (100-meters, 11.23 and 200-metes, 23.35), Kyle Charles (800-meter run, 2:00.38), Daniel Chrkavy (110-meter hurdles, 16.55), Ian Westrope (300-meter hurdles, 42.76), Tyrone Prescod (long jump, 20’9”), and Layton Lange (triple jump, 38’5.75”).

Quincy’s team scored high through the performances of Luke Grigg (first in 110-meter hurdles, 15.17, 300-meter hurdles, 41.56, and pole vault, 13’6”), and Christian Perez (second in 110-meter hurdles, 16.47), Mitchell Karstetter (second in discus, 132’5”), Ian Huxstable (first in long jump, 21’1.75” and second in high jump, 6’), Michael Veenendaal (third in pole vault, 11’6”) and the 4x100-meter relay team of Grigg, Huxtable, Alex Omlin, and Micheal Ren that ended up second with a 45.05.

The Othello boys team was led by Alvaro Barajas’ wins in the shot put (45’) and discus (141’).

The Lady Tigers’ track team once again scored big behind numerous top performances which included, Daiam Navarro (100-meter hurdles, 16.12, and 300-meter hurdles, 48.19), Danielle Friend (1600-meter run, 5:46.44), and Kendall Hintz (pole vault, 10’).

The 4x400-meter relay team of Navarro, Erin Monda, Taylor Barnes, and Lauren Yont also took first with a 4:15.86.

Other top performances for Ephrata came from Jordyn Murray (second, shot put, 35’10”), Friend (second, 3,200-meters, 12:23.38), Barnes (second, 400-meters, 1:02.84), Julia Weaver (third, 100-meters, 13.23 and 200-meters, 28.14), Lauren Young (third, 400-meters, 1:03.64), Hannah Gunderson (third, 800-meters, 2:29.27), Morgan Sisson (third, 3,200-meters, 12:50.21), Kayla Franks (third, 100-meter hurdles, 17.27), Monda (third, 300-meter hurdles, 48.83), Abby Smith (third, shot put, 34’), Kelsey Yenney (third, javelin, 92’4”), Nikki Pope (third, triple jump, 32’7”), and Alex Gallegos (third, pole vault, 8’).

Ephrata’s 4x100-meter relay team of Yount, Pope, Weaver and Franks took second with a 51.97, while the 4x200-meter team of Weaver, Franks, Kari Inch, and Pam Avila took third finishing with a 1:55.02.

Quincy’s team was sparked by the dynamic duo of Jazmine Perez and Taylor Kunkel.

Perez took first in the 200-meter run (27.63) and the 400-meter run (1:01.64), while teaming with Kacie Reynolds, Kylie Williamson, and Kala Bundle to take the 4x200-meter relay with a 1:51.03.

She also joined forces with Kunkel, Elizabeth Blancas, and Kacie Reynolds on the third-place 4x100-meter team (52.83).

Kunkel took first in the triple jump with a 35’6.75” effort and ended up second in the long jump with a 15’1.75” performance.

Reynolds also chipped in with a top score, taking third in the high jump (4’6”).

Othello’s Tiffany Martinez took first in the shot put (35’11.25”) and discus (122’1”), while teammate Christine Kirkwood won the javelin with a throw of 142’3”.
