Soap Lake hosting soap box derby
SOAP LAKE — Entry forms to participate in the May 29 Soap Lake Box Derby must be received by Soap Lake City Hall Monday.
Registration forms are available at www.soaplakeforlocals.com. The cost to participate is $15 and all participants get a T-shirt. Guidelines for box car construction regulations are available on the Web site.
About 32 people are registered for the box car race, said Soap Lake police Chief and Event Director Jim Dorris.
There are three racing divisions; youth, junior and senior. The youth category is for ages 8 to 13, junior is for ages 14 to 17 and senior is for ages 18 and older, he said. Each division qualifies for a first and second place trophy and third place certificate.
There is also a Best of Show award voted on by the public.
Dorris said the biggest and best award is the Sportsmanship Award.
The event is being organized and presented by Soap Lake Boyscout Troop 44, he said. Although the troop is using the event as their community involvement project, the event is a community event, he explained. Anyone can participate.
During the event, the city will close off Main Street for the race, Dorris said. The race begins at the top of the hill at the public library. The racing pits open at 7:30 a.m. for inspections of the soap box cars and for practice runs. The qualifying races begin at 9 a.m.
Prior to the event, breakfast is served at 6 a.m. at the finish line for $3.
Dorris explained he is working to make the Soap Lake event a sanctioned event with the All-American Soap Box Derby so qualifying racers can participate in the national race held in Ohio.
