Why take a driving safety course?

| May 12, 2010 2:00 PM

Every driver likely remembers spending a few hours in the car with that teacher who had an emergency break over on the passenger side. But as an adult, have you thought recently about getting some more training to make you a better driver?

While behind-the-wheel and classroom training are required for teens getting their license, there are also a number of opportunities for adults to get some extra driving safety training. While it may seem silly to take classes that aren't required, completing these classes will often lead to a discount on your auto insurance in addition to making you safer and more confident behind the wheel.

The most common classes available to adults are defensive driving classes. While you may know all the rules of the road and consider yourself a good driver, a defensive driving course will teach you to anticipate poor driving from other drivers who might not be as adept or careful as you. The classes will also cover situations in which adverse driving conditions should be expected.

If you are interested in enrolling in a defensive driving class, visit your state's department of motor vehicles website or give them a call. If your state's DMV doesn't offer the classes, it's likely that they partner with another program and can point you in the right direction. Topics on the classes may vary, so choose the one you are most interested in. Most classes cost around $25 and can either be taken in person or online.

Before taking a class, make sure it is accredited with the department of motor vehicles so you can get official credit. Many auto insurance providers, including Allstate, will likely give you discounted rates if you complete a defensive driving course.

Another popular option is a class aimed at drivers age 55 and older. These classes focus on teaching older drivers how to deal with declining reaction time and other issues that come with the aging process. An eight-hour class, which can also be broken into two four-hour classes, is offered in most states and costs about $25 as well. Like the defensive driving courses, many insurance providers will provide senior citizens with discounted rates for taking classes that are accredited with the DMV.

In addition to allowing you to get an insurance discount, you may learn something that will save your life by completing one of these classes. You may also learn something that will help you avoid an accident - and a clean driving record will save you even more money on your auto insurance.
