Othello Pioneer Park creators honored

OTHELLO — An Othello woman plans to erect a plaque in Pioneer Park in Othello to recognize the men responsible for creating and caring for the park.

Marty Yeager asked Othello City Council for permission to place the plaque. She explained she remembered Sam Knepper and Mr. Hoke creating the park when her family first moved to Othello in 1937. She could not recall Mr. Hoke’s first name.

“They were early pioneers,” she explained.

Yeager said she remembered thinking it was the first patch of green area in Othello. The men also planted trees in the park.

Knepper and Hoke chose to build the park next to a family store. The park is located at Main Street and Fourth Avenue.

Yeager said she is planning to have the plaque done in about a week and is paying for the plaque herself. She hopes to place the plaque on a gazebo in the park.

The council approved the request unanimously during their last meeting.
