Chiefs win heading into districts
YAKIMA — A rally and a three-set victory were enough to help the Moses Lake boys tennis team wrap up their regular season with a 5-2 win at Eisenhower on Saturday.
Moses Lake (8-6) head to Wenatchee on this weekend for the beginning of the Big 9 District Meet.
The Chiefs win in Yakima was kick started by the play of No. 1 singles player Connor Lange.
Lange, trailing 5-1 in the first set mounted a furious rally and ended up winning 11 straight games to capture a 7-5, 6-0 victory.
The rest of Moses Lake’s singles players also pulled out wins.
At No.2, Conner Koreis pulled out a 6-1, 3-6 6-2 win while No. 3 Tyler Knapp cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
“Tyler has won six matches in a row now and he has really been a plus for us at season’s end,” Moses Lake coach Jon Wrigley said. “He has figured out that sometimes the easiest way to win a match is to keep the ball in play.”
At No. 4 singles Mikael Mulugeta finished up his season at 8-1 with a 6-1, 6-2 win.
“His play is unorthodox and is a real challenge for other schools to do deal with,” Wrigley said. “He has been a big part of the team’s success.”
Doubles play didn’t go quite as well for the Chiefs as only the No. 1 team of Dominic Cacchiotti/Levi Huddleston could pull out a win, securing a 7-5, 6-4 decision.
“I was surprised that we only got one win in doubles,” Wrigley admitted. “This is the best doubles line-up I’ve seen from Ike in the past few years. Dominic and Levi won some big points and their strong returns was the key to the match.”
Othello boys 4, Selah 1
OTHELLO — A singles sweep helped the Othello Huskies to a 4-1 win over Selah in both teams’ final Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) dual of the season.
No. 1 singles player David Charles scored a 6-4, 7-5 win while Othello’s Alec Montemayor held on for a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win.
Othello also took two out of three doubles matches.
The No 2 team of Marcus Garza and Wesley Cogswell rolled to a 6-2, 6-4 win while the third team of Ryan Garza and Ben Taft cruised to an equally impressive 6-1, 6-3 victory.
Eisenhower girls 5, Moses Lake 2
YAKIMA — A year of improvement ended on a dour note for the Moses Lake girls who dropped a 5-2 decision at Eisenhower on Saturday.
Next up for the Chiefs (4-10) will be a trip to Wenatchee this weekend and the Big 9 District playoffs.
Moses Lake, which didn’t win a dual last year, won one match in singles and doubles against Eisenhower.
At No. 4 singles, Jessica Homesley pulled out a tough 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win.
“Jessica was down 2-5 in the second set, but she never lost her composure,” Wrigley said. “She calmly battled back into the set and got the only win for our singles.”
The No. 2 doubles team of Iris Banks and Micaiah Stones ended their run of strong play with a 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-4 win.
“Micaiah has just improved so much since I saw her last year, her play at the net is very strong,” Wrigley said. “Iris is so competitive and stays right with her they really have great chemistry on the court.”
Amanda Hart and Annalise Odegaard dropped a tough 6-2, 5-7, 2-6 decision at No. 3 doubles.
“They had two match points in the second set and when they could not close it out they got a little rattled,” Wrigley said. “They had won five straight at third doubles heading into this match.”
Othello girls 3, Selah 2
OTHELLO — A nice, dramatic, close match was just the way to end the home schedule for the Othello Huskies’ girls tennis team.
A sweep in doubles play helped offset a tough day on the court for Othello’s singles players and help pull out a 3-2 win over Selah on Saturday.
At No. 1 doubles, Othello’s Jody Walker and Kayla Spor won 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, while at No. 2 Jocelyn Cantu and Ashleigh Alinguez also won in dramatic fashion, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-1.
The Lady Huskies clinched the win behind the play of the No. 3 team of Yanitta Cantu and Amelia Roylance who cruised to a 6-0, 7-6 (7-0) win.
