Bernard crash review continues
GRANT COUNTY — The Washington State Patrol expects to complete the investigation of the crash that killed Grant County sheriff’s deputy John Bernard by the end of May.
“We are close to being done,” said state patrol Sgt. Jerry Cooper.
He explained computer forensics are being used to analyze for possible distractions leading to the crash. Cooper provided cellphone use as an example of what the forensics will detect but said it does not seem likely cellphone use or other electronic distractions were a factor. He explained it is used in the process of elimination for various factors leading to the crash.
Bernard died the night of Jan. 3, while on patrol on Road 5 near Ephrata. His car left the roadway and rolled. He died at the scene.
The Washington State Patrol Major Accident Investigation Team, based in Seattle, is conducting the investigation of the crash.
On Jan. 11 a public memorial service was held at Big Bend Community College to honor the fallen deputy. Hundreds of people attended the ceremony while law enforcement colleagues shared memories of the man.
