CWAC playoffs set; Chiefs to host district game
Quincy 15, Ephrata 9; Othello 3, Ellensburg 1; Wahluke 3, Warden 2
EPHRATA — It looks like Quincy’s really mad.
The Jacks soccer team, coming off a heartbreaking loss at Othello last week have come back firing on all cylinders in their last two matches, including Tuesday night’s emphatic 5-1 win at Ephrata.
Quincy (15-1, 12-1) is the Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) North winners and now await their future District playoff opponents yet to be determined.
Ephrata (5-10, 4-9) begin their journey for a state bid tonight at Prosser (6-7) with a 4 p.m. Play-In game.
The Tigers hope to perform better than they did against the Jacks, who took a 2-0 lead into the intermission with two Luis Sorto goals, the first coming in the game’s first three minutes.
Ramon Sanchez pulled the host Tigers to within 2-1 at the 56th minutes mark, but then Sorto recorded his hat trick 14 minutes later and Pedro Nunez put the final nail in the coffin two minutes after.
The Tigers didn’t help their cause with an own goal five minutes before the final whistle.
Quincy outshot Ephrata 15-9.
Othello 3, Ellensburg 1
ELLENSBURG — With Ephrata losing, Ellensburg had a chance to steal the CWAC North’s fourth and final district bid on Tuesday but then again they had to play a hot Othello Huskies team.
That being said the host Bulldogs tried to hang in there but couldn’t counter the Othello attack which cruised to a 3-1 victory.
Othello led 1-0 on an Ivan Lopez goal in the eighth minute and took that cushion into halftime.
Enrique Campos built the Othello (11-5, 8-5) lead to two on his 48th minute strike which was soon followed by a Bulldogs tally.
However, Andres Mendoza’s penalty kick in the 70th minute put the game out of reach for Othello, who host a CWAC Play-In game tonight at 6 p.m. against Wapato (5-8).
Wahluke 3, Warden 2 (OT)
WAHLUKE — A third overtime loss this season was enough to doom the Warden Cougars and end their post season hopes on Tuesday night.
Wahluke captured a 3-2 overtime decision off of a deflected direct kick that slipped past Cougars’ goalkeeper Martin Aguilar for the win.
Warden (7-8, 3-5) finished in fourth place of the South Central Athletic Conference (SCAC) East, one spot out of a district playoff berth.
Warden trailed 1-0 at halftime and trailed 2-0 five minutes into the second half.
Still, Warden didn’t relent in their push for the post season and cut the deficit in half when Antonio Figueroa outran the Wahluke defense to knock home a shot into the left bottom corner of the net make the score 2-1.
The Cougars ended up tying the game when Carlos Gomez, off of an assist from Antonio Figueroa, drilled a shot into goal and all things were square at 2-2 setting up the overtime 20 minutes later.
Moses Lake to host playoff
MOSES LAKE — First they record their best record in over a decade and now the Moses Lake Chiefs soccer team has learned they will host a Big 9 district playoff.
Moses Lake (10-5 overall) host Southridge at 1 p.m. this Saturday at Larson Field. The winner would be one win away from a Regional playoff berth.
The Chiefs finished their regular season home slate with a 6-1 record, which includes a 2-1 victory over Southridge on April 3.
