Moses Lake false fire alarm penalty increased

| May 3, 2010 9:00 PM

MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake City Council increased the fee related to the Moses Lake Fire Department responding to false fire alarms in commercial buildings.

The motion passed on the final reading during the last council meeting.

The ordinance allows for two false alarms to go without a penalty fee during a three month period. The third false alarm will result in a $500 fine.

Often times a false alarm is a result of a faulty system or human error resulting in the fire department sending vehicles and personnel to what they think is an emergency.

When fire alarm companies are working on alarm systems, oftentimes the system engages so the company is required to notify the fire department of their work prior to any false alarms.

If the company does not inform the fire department of alarm system testing and it engages, they are fined $100 for the first offense and $200 for the second offense, according to the ordinance.
