Chiefs begin track season, Papa Wells sees strong results
WENATCHEE — Not a bad start for the Moses Lake High School track teams this past weekend in Wenatchee.
The boys and girls teams headed to the Ray Cockrum Relays held a the Wenatchee High School track to see how their pre-season preparations have paid off and so far it appears they can count on some big results in 2010.
On the boys side, the team recorded win in the Javelin relay and the Triple Jump relay, while finished second in the Long Jump relay and tied for third in the High Jump relay.
This meet was a non-scoring meet and the relays work by taking a team’s top three athletes and adding their best throws of the day for one combined score.
In their javelin win, Jordan Wilks (5th, 153’6”), Mitchell Hill (6th, 150’3”), and Kyle Robolard (111’6”) led the way while in the triple jump, Hill (2nd, 40’11”), Dylan Moberg (3rd, 40’9”), and Wilks (4th, 38’10”) keyed the victory.
“I thought we had a good first meet for the athletes and looking forward to starting league on Thursday at Davis,” Moses Lake boys coach Kevin Whittall said. “The surprise athlete of the meet was Dylan Moberg. He is a senior who is out for the first time for track and tripled jump over 40-feet which is great.”
Long jump results included Randy Koon (4th, 19’7”), Moberg (6th, 19’), and Hill (7th, 18’11.25”).
In the high jump, Koon (T9th, 5’6”), and Thomas Johnson and Moberg (T13th, 5’4”), sparked the top finish.
In running events Wilks finished ninth in the 100-meter run (11.87), and Johnson took ninth as well in the 110-meter hurdles (17.31).
Richardo Gamez finished the 200-meter run in 24.6 seconds for 10th place.
“It is nice to get the first meet out of the way and get the rust off of our athletes,” Whittall said. “We have a big first league meet this Thursday and I believe our athletes will compete very well heading into the spring break.”
On the girls side, Moses Lake finished fifth in the Shot Put relay and eighth in the javelin relay.
In the shot put, Sadie Nielsen (7th, 30’10”), Taylor Ballard (15th, 26’1”), and Jaerden Jenkins (20’0.75”) led the team and in the javelin, Cherie Fackrell (50’5”), Jenkins (43’5”) and Stephanie Kemp (36’10”) score for the Chiefs.
Magie Munoz finished seventh in the 200-meter run (27.94) and ninth in the 100-meter run (13.5) to round out the top Chiefs finishes this weekend.
Papa Bell Invite
YAKIMA — The Quincy Jacks, Ephrata Tigers, and Royal Knights all travelled south to take part in the Papa Bell Invitational on Saturday to get their new track seasons underway.
Recording the most top ten finishes was the Quincy girls track team as Jazmine Perez, a win in the 400-meter run (1:04.26) and Taylor Kunkel, first in the long jump (16’6”), led the way for the Lady Jacks.
Other top finishes included, Marinda Talley (3rd, 800-meter run, 2:34.83), Kacie Reynolds, Talley, Kunkel, and Perez, who finished third 4x400-meter relay, while Elizabeth Blancas, Maricela Serrano, Katia Perez, and Kylie Williamson also took third in the 4x200-meter relay.
Perez took seventh in the 200-meter run (28.38), and Williamson (58.28) finished eighth in the 300-meter hurdles.
The Royal Knights boys track team also represented themselves well with a win by Ethan Tonnemaker in the 3,200-meter run (10:27.54), and top finishes by Travis Villegas (2nd, 200-meter run, 23.60), Dylan Delay (4th, 110-meter hurdles, 16.99 and 300-meter hurdles, 45.74), and Juan Jimenez, Christian Fernandez, Villegas, and Delay (5th, 4x400-meter relay).
Villegas finished fourth in the 400-meter run (54.13) and Tonnemaker took fourth in the 1600-meter run (4:42.12).
Ephrata’s boys team saw Jerome Prescod take first in the high jump (6’4”), and the triple jump (46’2”) while taking second in the long jump (20’5.25”).
His brother Tyrone took third in the long jump (20’5.25”) and fourth in the triple jump (40’6.5”).
Brad Christensen finished seventh in the javelin (136’5”) for Ephrata.
Lady Tigers, Jordyn Murray (1st, shot put, 37’10.75”) and Rachelle Pope (9th, triple jump, 27’2”), were the top girl finishers for Ephrata.
Luke Grigg of Quincy tool first in the 110-meter hurdles (15.64) and third in the pole vault (12’6”).
Ian Huxtable finished fifth in the long jump (19’11.25”) and Grigg tenth (18’8.25”) while Mitchell Karstetter (112’3”) finished eighth in the discus.
Emmanuel Lopez ended up ninth in the 800-meter run (2:17.02).
Page Woodward of Royal took second in the 400-meter run (1:05.25) and third in the long jump (15’11”) to end up the top Lady Knight finisher.
