All Pennsylvania vacations should include a stop in the Brandywine Valley
Just 25 minutes from Philadelphia, in southeastern Pennsylvania, lies the picturesque Brandywine Valley. Known for its scenic rolling hills and valleys, the winding Brandywine River, and its rich history and cultural attractions, this area should not be missed when planning Pennsylvania vacations.
World-class museums, distinguished historic estates, and some of the most beautiful formal and natural gardens in the country are just some of the attractions you'll find in the Valley. Here's a sampling of a few of the places you should put on your itinerary when planning a trip to the area:
* All Pennsylvania vacations should include a visit to the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford. It's often called "The Wyeth Museum" because of its extensive collection of paintings from three generations of the Wyeth family: N.C., Andrew and Jamie. The collection also includes works by Brandywine School founder Howard Pyle, as well as such artists as Maxfield Parrish, Charles Dana Gibson, Rockwell Kent and Jasper Cropsey.
* Longwood Gardens, a former du Pont family estate now open to the public, is composed of 1,050 acres of gardens, woodlands and meadows and more fountains than any other garden in the United States. The estate also features 20 indoor gardens including a heated conservatory, the main fountain garden and an Italian water garden. Longwood hosts an ongoing program of special performances, including theatrical productions in an open air theater and a summer concert series.
* Winterthur, the former home of Henry Francis du Pont, is one of the great American country estates, designed in the spirit of 18th and 19th century European country houses. Du Pont was an avid collector of antiques, and today the property houses the country's premier collection of American furniture and decorative arts. Be sure to allow time to stroll through some of the estate's spectacular gardens.
* The Brandywine Valley Wine Trail takes visitors on scenic trip through the rolling hills of Chester County Pennsylvania to eight estate vineyards united in their common desire to make wines that reflect the distinct character of the Brandywine Valley. You can tour the vineyards, picnic on the grounds and, of course, spend some time in the tasting rooms sampling the local vintages.
Cheap flights allow easy access to this idyllic region, which can be reached conveniently from several nearby metro airports. Check for fares into Philadelphia International or Baltimore/Washington International to begin your adventure in the Valley.
