If you've never been to Manhattan, you may think vacationing there this summer would be a hot, expensive proposition. If you've taken New York vacations before, you may be wondering how to beat the heat and keep costs down on your trip there this season. You can stay cool and spend less when visiting New York by taking advantage of the plethora of free attractions available in the "city that never sleeps."

While native Manhattanites may decamp for cooler destinations during hazy summer days, smart tourists know that with plenty of cheap flights available online, and ample free - and air conditioned -- attractions throughout the city, summer is a great time to visit New York. There are plenty of places where sweaty travelers can take a break from the heat inside, in the comfort of icy air conditioning - and many of those places don't charge a dime for you to walk in the door.

Here is a sampling of spots where you can escape the heat and see something unique without spending any cash:

Grand Central Station - Stunning architecture and an ever-bustling atmosphere make Grand Central Station a must-see for virtually any New York vacation. Its ambiance and air conditioning are even more welcome when you're looking for a way to get off the city's sizzling streets.

Federal Reserve Bank - Six tours are given throughout the day, lasting about an hour. Although free, the tour space is limited, so make your reservation in advance. Visit www.newyorkfed.org to learn more.

Window shopping - While New York's shop windows are legendary portals on the city's thriving commerce scene, you don't have to confine yourself to window shopping from the sunny sidewalk. Iconic stores like Saks, Bergdorff Goodman, Macy's and FAO Schwartz charge nothing for you to stroll inside, savor the atmosphere and ogle the goods.

Cathedral cruising - Around the world, religious venues often capture a culture's most stunning architectural achievements, and New York is no exception. Step inside the famed St. Patrick's Cathedral, where Babe Ruth's requiem mass was held, to see a crowning example of neo-Gothic architecture. Or visit St. John the Divine, the world's largest cathedral built in the Gothic style.

Museum might - New York has some of the finest and most diverse museums of any city in the world. Some are free, but even among those that charge an entrance fee, many offer "free" nights when you can enter by paying whatever amount you deem fair. Noteworthy participants include the Guggenheim and the Whitney. Contact the museum you're interested in to see if and when they offer a "pay what you wish" night.

New York Public Library - Housing one of the world's most awe-inspiring collections of books, the library itself is a sight to behold, with breathtaking architecture and plenty of places to enjoy a quiet, cool moment in the heart of Manhattan's bustle. In addition to books, the library offers exhibits and art displays, and it is free and open to the public.

Seeing New York for less, and beating the summer heat at the same time, is easy when you find cheap flights online and plan to visit some of the city's many great free attractions.
