You don't necessarily need specialty insurance for your classic car

If you're one of the many people who own a vintage vehicle, you are likely paying more than you should for auto insurance. How could that be, you wonder? Isn't classic car insurance supposed to be less expensive?

Yes and no! The year, make and model of your vehicle will affect how it needs to be insured. The type of policy you select and the way you use your vehicle will determine how much it costs to get coverage.

While specialty insurance may seem like the way to go at first, closer examination will show it may be more cost effective to get coverage as an add-on or endorsement to your regular auto policy. Not only will you enjoy the benefit of having all of your vehicles covered under the same policy, you could be eligible for significant discounts as well.

* If you drive your vehicle less than 7,500 miles per year, you should be able to take advantage of a discount offered for low mileage.

* By covering your classic car under the same policy as your other vehicles, you may be eligible for a multi-vehicle discount.

* A discount may be offered if you can prove your classic car is kept in a locked garage overnight.

* Vehicles that are only driven for shows, parades, club activities and the like may be eligible for additional discounts.

Add all these discounts together, and you could end up enjoying significant savings. When requesting an auto insurance quote be sure to let the company you are dealing with know you have an older car that isn't driven very much.

Most insurance companies will surprise you with very affordable car insurance quotes for a classic.
