Insurance changes to think about when you get married

| June 10, 2010 2:00 PM

(ARA) - With all the fanfare and happiness that goes along with getting married, sometimes it's easy to forget some of the little things that must be done after you tie the knot. Changing your insurance policies to reflect your newlywed status is one of them.

The good news is that you and your spouse may stand to benefit as you change your marital status with many of your insurance providers. When you purchase combined policies, it is often less expensive than it would be to insure yourself. With this big change in your life, you should also consider certain things about your insurance policies as you go forward.

Auto insurance

In addition to likely receiving cheaper auto insurance rates through combining your policies, many providers also give promotional discounts to newlyweds. If you both have relatively clean driving records, you'll probably stand to benefit from a combined policy. But if one driver doesn't, it might be wise to consider both separate and combined policies to see which option is more affordable. Check with both your car insurance providers, as well as others, to see what policy might work best for you.

Health insurance

When you get married, your health insurance policy will likely allow you to add your spouse if you so chose. However, if both of you have health insurance available through your employer, make sure that combining policies will provide relatively the same coverage at a better rate. It's quite possible that you will still benefit from remaining on separate policies.

Life insurance

As you move on to this new stage in your life, you may consider insuring yourself so your spouse will be financially secure in case something happens to you. Look for a policy that best fits your current financial situation. If you already have life insurance, you will probably need to update your information to list your spouse as a beneficiary.
