Moving? Don't forget to check car insurance off the list of things to look at

(ARA) - Moving to a new place can be exciting, but it's also hectic. Beyond the general packing and unpacking and getting used to your new home, a number of tasks go along with moving that must also be completed. Dealing with changes in your car insurance is one of them.

While filling out a change of address form will ensure that your mail makes it to your new house, you will also need to provide separate notification to other agencies you deal with on a regular basis, including your auto insurance provider.

Because where you live affects your auto insurance rates, it's necessary to notify your provider when you move so they can adjust your rates accordingly. Check with your car insurance policy-holder to see how long you have to report a change of address. If you have to make a claim and you have not reported a change in residences within the time limit, you may run into trouble trying to collect what would otherwise be due to you.

If you're moving to a different state, there's a good chance your new state will have different laws regarding the minimum amount of auto insurance drivers must purchase. For example, most states require drivers to at least have liability insurance, but New Hampshire does not. States also have different maximum amounts that drivers would be responsible for in an accident. Make sure your car insurance policy covers that amount so you aren't faced with costs you can't or wouldn't want to cover if you get into a bad accident.

If you're moving to an area where theft or vandalism is more of a problem, you may want to consider adding comprehensive coverage if you don't already have it. This also may not be a bad idea if you are moving to a location where a natural disaster is more likely. If you're adding comprehensive coverage, make sure you know what is covered. Comprehensive coverage will cover most non-accident related damages, but they don't always cover everything.

If you're moving to an area where car theft is more common, you may want to add an anti-theft device to your car. This will not ensure your car is never stolen, but in many cases it will bring your insurance costs down.

Any time you have a major change in your policy, it's never a bad idea to shop around for a new policy that is affordable and fits your needs. With what's available on the Internet, it's never been easier to request and compare auto insurance quotes. For more answers to your auto insurance questions, visit Allstate.com.
