It might be time to re-evaluate your car insurance coverage

| June 3, 2010 2:00 PM

Paying too much? Just bought a new car? Had the same insurance forever? These are just a few reasons you may want to consider re-evaluating what type of insurance coverage you have on your automobile.

You can change auto insurance policies whenever you want, so there's no reason to delay the search if you think your coverage might not be right for you. Because auto insurance rates and coverage conditions depend on a number of factors, it's a good idea to keep tabs on your insurance to make sure your coverage works for you.

The following situations may warrant a look to see if a change in coverage is appropriate:

Change in family situation - Just get married? You may be eligible for cheaper coverage if you and your spouse purchase car insurance together. A new driver in the family also means new insurance rates, so it may be time to re-evaluate what type of coverage is best for your family.

Adding a new car - If you've recently added another automobile to your family's fleet, your coverage will also be affected. Take a look around for policies that best fit your modified fleet.

Paying too much - Have you recently learned that you're paying more for your car insurance than most people you know? Chances are you can find a cheaper policy that provides the same type of coverage by shopping around a bit.

Change in coverage preference - As your car ages and becomes less valuable, you might want to decide if you want to have the optional collision coverage on your insurance policy. On the other hand, you might find yourself in a position where you are more capable of paying for increased collision coverage on a newer car. Shop around before you change policies to find the cheapest and most preferable deal.

Change in driving record - If you recently got into an accident or were cited for a violation, your rates will change and you may want to see if another policy will fit you better. Same goes if you recently had an accident or violation come off your record, as you should be in line for a rate reduction.

Improving your insurability - Insurance providers often will provide you with better rates if you add an anti-theft device or complete a defensive driving class. If your student driver performs well in school, it may also allow your family to receive better rates. See if your policy or another policy provides such incentives.
