Be careful when considering cutting costs on your car insurance

| June 3, 2010 2:00 PM

It's never a bad idea to shop around for a good deal when buying auto insurance, but the phrase "buyer beware" should still apply as you look for bargains.

With everything that's available on the Web and elsewhere, getting and comparing car insurance quotes is as easy as ever. But as you are comparing rates, it's important to note that just because one policy is cheaper, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's better.

Because there are many options to consider when piecing together an insurance policy, one auto insurance package could be completely different than another. Therefore, it's imperative that you know exactly what type of coverage you'll be buying before you consider switching to a less expensive policy.

Find out what's covered under the policy

Beyond liability coverage, which is the minimum required in most states and covers damage you may inflict to another person or vehicle, there are a number of optional coverages that may affect the price of a policy. If you're driving a newer or more valuable car, you will likely want to consider purchasing collision coverage that will help you cover the cost of repairs if you get into an accident. Also, don't automatically assume that liability coverage on its own is the cheapest option. You might be able to add collision or comprehensive insurance, which covers non-accident events, for little or no extra cost.

Do some research on your potential provider

Is the auto insurance provider you are working with a company, that you know, you can trust? You want to make sure the provider can pay for a claim if you have one. Use the Internet and ask around to make sure the company is one with a good reputation that will be around for awhile.

Remember insurance rates are not static

If you pick up a speeding ticket or are found at fault in an accident, your insurance rates will probably go up. When you are looking at insurance policies, it's worth taking a look to see what your rates might become if your driving record changes. Remember, you can change policies at any time.
