MOSES LAKE - The City of Moses Lake formerly proclaimed Aug 3, 2010, "National Night Out" during a council meeting.
"National Night Out is designed to heighten crime prevention; generate support and participation in local anti-crime programs; strengthen neighborhood's spirit and police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals to let them know that neighborhoods are organized and are fighting back," according to the proclamation. "More than 34 million people in more than 15,000 other communities will join forces to promote National Night Out with 2010 marking the 27th anniversary of this event."
Moses Lake Police Chief Dean Mitchell said citizens participating in the event are showing criminals they are working to deter crime and are protecting their neighborhoods.
"It's a date that has been celebrated for years," he said.
The police department is working with the Moses Lake Business Association to host a celebration from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at LakeTown Landing on West Third Avenue.
"Downtown businesses will be open during this time and residential block watch groups will be hosting individual parties," Capt. Dave Ruffin stated. "Please come and share with us during this special event. It is a good time to gather and meet your neighbors and other people who are concerned about preventing crime. The police department believes that by working together with the community, we can prevent and stop crime.
