Woman sues Grant Mental Healthcare

EPHRATA — A woman is suing Grant County and Grant Mental Healthcare, claiming a nurse practitioner gave her disabled husband a drug overdose.

Gemini Coxon filed a medical malpractice civil lawsuit in Grant County Superior Court.

She claims a Grant Mental Healthcare employee acted without consulting her when he gave her husband, David Coxon, “an excess of toxic medication.” The type of medication was not included in the complaint.

The woman normally controlled the amount of medication David Coxon received, but Gemini Coxon came home in April 2007 to find her husband in a stupor. The disabled man was unresponsive and died shortly after he was discovered, according to the complaint.

She is asking for a judgment to include David Coxon’s lost earnings, the cost of funeral expenses and payment for pain and suffering and the loss of the enjoyment of life, according to the complaint. No dollar amount was listed.

Charles Hamilton III represents Coxon. The Columbia Basin Herald was unable to reach him by deadline.

Both Commissioners Richard Stevens and Cindy Carter said they couldn’t comment on the case because it’s in litigation.

Grant Integrated Services Executive Director Jalane Christian-Stoker was not available for comment. Grant Mental Healthcare is one of the sections of her department.
