The key to having a great family road trip

| July 21, 2010 2:00 PM

Want to make 2010 the year of your most memorable family road trip ever? If so, instead of planning the destination and activities yourself, turn a little bit of control over to your children. Getting kids involved in the planning process is a great way to get them excited about a trip.

Start by calling a family meeting and asking everyone to name a place they'd like to go. If the kids say Disney World, challenge them to find other things they'd like to do in Florida, like visit the Everglades, so you're not spending all your time at the theme park.

If your family enjoys camping, ask the kids which state they'd like to check out next, and start researching places to go and things to see and do together. Most attractions have websites these days. Browse through them with your kids and help them fill out forms to request brochures that can be sent directly to them. Kids love to receive mail.

If they played a significant role in the planning process, as the trip gets closer the kids will be so excited they'll (hopefully) refrain from complaining. For those who tend to get a bit bored despite their excitement, keep these suggestions from Travelingmom.com in mind:

* Bring along a hand-held video game player and a good selection of games. If you don't have one yet, go out and get one before your trip. Many parents will attest to the fact that these wonderful devices have saved their sanity.

* Have plenty of juice boxes and healthy snacks on hand so you won't have to stop when the kids get the munchies.

* Offer an "only-in-the-car" treat kids can look forward to, such as a special treat they don't normally get at home.

Before setting off on your voyage, it is also a good idea to review your car insurance policy to make sure you know what kind of coverage you have. Knowing you have adequate car insurance will give you peace of mind, as you'll be covered no matter what happens on your trip. Many companies offer online auto insurance quotes that you can receive instantly.
