Planning a road trip? What not to leave at home

| July 14, 2010 2:00 PM

If you're planning to travel this summer, you may want to opt for a road trip - domestic airfares between June and September will be 24 percent higher than they were in 2009, according to the fare-tracking website Bing Travel.

Budgets are tighter this year because of high unemployment, stock markets in retreat and a still-fragile economy. To save money, travel agents expect the majority of folks to stay close to home, traveling to destinations such as state and national parks, campgrounds, beaches and theme parks.

If you're an old pro at the family road trip, you may need a few reminders of the essentials to take along. For those who are new at the game, take note of the five things you can't leave home without.

1. Legal documents - In the rush to get ready, many people forget to bring things like their driver's license (for all drivers), vehicle registration, roadside service card and current car insurance policy information. But having these items with you could prevent your trip from being ruined if you're pulled over by police, break down or get into an accident.

Do whatever you have to do to make sure you'll remember to bring along all necessary legal documents. You may even want to bring along a copy of your auto insurance card for peace of mind, and so you know what kind of car insurance coverage you have if you need it when far from home.

2. Detailed maps - A lot of people have vehicle navigation systems these days, but it's still a good idea to bring along detailed maps that will provide great ideas on places to check out if you decide to deviate from the original trip plan.

3. Cell phone - Just in case you break down on the side of the road or need medical assistance while on your trip, it's a good idea to bring along a cell phone. And just as important, don't forget to bring the car and wall chargers too.

4. Entertainment for the kids - So you won't have to endure hours of listening to a whining child, be sure to bring along plenty of entertainment options. Among the more popular options are books on tape, music, portable DVD players and gaming devices.

5. Snacks - Unless you want to spend a good part of the trip feeding quarters into vending machines at rest stops, be sure to bring along plenty of snacks and drinks. Good options include chips, crackers, fruit, juice boxes and water.
