River Dogs gear up for state tourney

EPHRATA — With the Senior Babe Ruth North State Tournament set to start tomorrow in Ephrata, the Columbia Basin River Dogs prepped for action by hosting the River Dogs Invitational this weekend.

Two split squads entered the field and when the dust settled on a hot weekend of action, the River Dogs finished third by finishing with a 5-1 record. Their only loss was to the Spokane Dodgers on Saturday morning. The Perros del Rio team featuring younger players from the River Dogs program ended up their tournament run with a 4-2 record and a fourth place finish.

By beating the Covington Cubs 11-3 on Saturday night and the Bozeman Bucks, 10-0, yesterday, the River Dogs wrapped up play with a win as they now set their sights on the Babe Ruth North State Tourney.

In the win against Bozeman, Cameron Alvarado (Moses Lake HS), Dylan Signorelli (Moses Lake HS) and Brett Gray (Big Bend CC) all recorded multiple-hit games while Mitch Yada (Moses Lake HS) pitched a two-hit shutout.

Perros del Rio wound up its tournament with an 11-3 win yesterday over the SBA Hurricanes. Corey Zapel (Cle Elum HS)  and Brett Lopez (Moses Lake HS) led the offensive attack with three and two RBIs respectively.

The River Dogs’ started off tournament play with three wins, kicking off with a 20-4 win over the New Zealand White team on Thursday. Josh Snider (Moses Lake HS) had three hits, and was a home run short of a cycle, while Joel Greear (Ellensburg HS) finished 2-for-3 with a two-run triple.

On Friday the River Dogs knocked off the Marysville Hawks 5-1 behind the pitching efforts of Seth Darling (Cle Elum HS) who recorded a complete game while allowing only five hits and striking out 11.

Alvarado went 2-for-2 with a double and a triple while Shon Valdez (Othello HS) ended up 2-for-3.

Later that day, they moved to 3-0 with a 2-0 win over Bozeman. Cody Johns (Naches Valley HS) threw a two-hit shutout and Stockton Taylor (Brewster HS) sparked the offense with a 2-for-3 outing.

Perros del Rio won their opener by beating New Zealand Black, 6-1 on Thursday night.

Kody Samuels (Moses Lake HS) pitched a five-hit, complete game while Alvarado finished 2-for-3, and Signorelli hit a first inning, two-run home run.

They moved to 2-0 with a 7-6 win over the Spokane Dodgers-White team when Samuels hit a two-out bases loaded double in the seventh to give the Perros del Rio squad the win.

Now the River Dogs (44-15) will get their boys together to begin play tomorrow at Johnson/O’Brien Stadium at 11 a.m. against the Kent Bulldogs and will then play 8 p.m. if they were win.

A squad of Columbia Basin All Stars named the Desert Dogs play at 5 p.m.
