MOSES LAKE - High gusts of wind didn't stop many families from attending a Fourth of July celebration in Moses Lake Sunday.

The Carter family broke the tradition of lighting their own fireworks at home to participate in various activities at McCosh Park.

"We decided to venture out this year and try something different," said Craig Carter. "We usually can see the fireworks show at our house and it is always a great show, so we knew we'd have a good time."

Free activities were hosted by the Moses Lake Parks and Recreation Department all evening. A barbecue featuring hot dogs, chips lemonade and ice cream kicked off the event.

"The best part of the Fourth of July is just being with my family," said Erin Carter, 13. "We love watching fireworks because it's cool when all the different colors come together and light up the sky."

A concert featuring the band Hit Explosion took place at the amphitheater. The band played a mixture of 1970s and 1980s disco-dance covers.

"My family and I come down here every year because we enjoy the music and the show," said Amika Fallentine.

Fallentine came from Tumwater to join in on the holiday fun with her extended family in Moses Lake.

"I've been to a lot of different fireworks shows before, but this one is my favorite because they really offer you a variety of fireworks," said Tina Fallentine. "Many shows only last for about 10 or 15 minutes and this show is a good 25 to 30 minutes long."

Gary O'Brien said the fireworks show in Moses Lake is his favorite Fourth of July activity.

"It's a great show because there are a lot of varieties of colors," he said. "The show was better last year than the year before and that's what makes it great; it just gets better and better every year."

O'Brien and his family stuck American flags in their hats to show their patriotism. The family considers the Fourth of July a very important holiday, O'Brien said.

"It's a great time to all get together," he said. "We usually have a big family barbecue together, but this year we decided to come out to the community barbecue and see what it was all about. We enjoy Moses Lake events because they are always really enjoyable."
