Ohio vacations show you the heart of rock and roll and more

| July 1, 2010 2:00 PM

There are many places people in America consider worthy of making a pilgrimage to at some point in their lives - the Grand Canyon, the Empire State Building and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, to name a few. The latter is perhaps the biggest draw when it comes to Ohio vacations.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, opened to the public in 1995. Its mission is to educate visitors, fans and scholars from around the world about the history and continuing significance of rock and roll music, and in its 15 years of existence, it has done a good job, welcoming more than 7.5 million visitors.

The museum hosts a collection of impressive and iconic rock and roll artifacts, including Elvis Presley's personal jukebox and car, John Lennon's Sgt. Pepper uniform and Michael Jackson's signature glove, worn during the performance of "Billie Jean" on his Dangerous tour. There are also many opportunities to catch live performances by some of the most talented artists in the world.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame isn't the only significant attraction worth seeing while you're in Ohio. The Toledo Museum of Art is also a huge draw. It features a collection of 35,000 works of art, including pieces by such greats as Cezanne, Picasso, Monet and Rembrandt. Since its founding in 1901, admission has been absolutely free.

But it's probably a trip to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium that makes Ohio vacations most memorable for the kids. The zoo's newest attractions are Polar Frontier (an exhibit that houses polar bears, Alaskan brown bears and arctic foxes) and Manatee Coast. As a partner in the United States Fish and Wildlife Service's Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation program, the Zoo takes in manatees rescued from the wild and cares for them until they can be released.

Another great plus: Every year, hundreds, if not thousands, of kids are lucky enough to meet the zoo's highly popular director emeritus, none other than Jack Hanna, star of Jack Hanna's Animal Adventures. Admission is $12.99 for ages 10 - 59, $7.99 for kids ages 2-9 and seniors 60 and over. Children under two are free.
