Chiefs record win final regular season match
SUNNYSIDE — It may not have been the prettiest thing, but the Moses Lake High School Chiefs wrestling team managed to pull out a 36-24 win at Sunnyside last night to cap off their regular season with another win.
The Chiefs came into the match coming off three consecutive in-season tournament championships along with the Big 9 Columbia Division title with their 37-24 win over Wenatchee last week.
Still, the perfection that is expected and the expectations held so high were at the forefront following last night’s road win.
“It did not look pretty,” Moses Lake coach Jamie Wise said. “But once again we had a bunch of back ups in there and we shuffled the lineup around and they did come through. Just in many cases we didn’t wrestle as well as we could have.”
Starting at 215-pounds Brian Chamberlain continued his strong string of wrestling with a third-round pin but the Chiefs led 6-3 after the first two matches when Kabe Fluaitt dropped a 6-2 decision at 285-pounds.
But a few matches later the tide slowly started to turn for the Chiefs.
Hayden Wise captured a 4-2 overtime win at 112-pounds and then Jordan Bishop scored a key 7-3 win over state-ranked Isido Ramirez.
Then Ricco Moreno recorded a second-round pin at 140-pounds and Nico Moreno followed that up with a second-round pin of his own at 145-pounds to take a 27-21 lead.
“Ricco wrestled really well tonight,” Jamie Wise said. “He was up 12-1 just after the first period. He showed a lot of things that we’ve been working on in practice.”
Hector Zavala took a 5-3 decision at 152-pounds and then Logan Phelps wrapped up the scoring with a pin win at 171-pounds.
With the post season looming coach Wise won’t begin to guess how well his team will do, but will continue to work on what they need to win.
“They just need to work on getting a lot tougher,” Jamie Wise said. “We’ll just keep working and get ourselves ready..”
Toppenish 40, Ephrata 31
EPHRATA — The Ephrata Tigers enter the post season off a tough 40-31 home loss to Toppenish last night.
Robert Motzkus (152-pounds) and Andrew Sconce (160-pounds) each scored pin victories for Ephrata to lead their scoring charge.
Anthony Bush at 135-pounds and Seth Kulackoski (140-pounds) were rewarded with forfeit wins while Kyle Pohle scored a 6-5 win at 135-pounds.
Kurt Nygard scored four points for the Tigers with a 10-2 win at 140-pounds over Rafael Osorio.
Ephrata was beset by five pin losses against their visitors.
“I was very pleased with our effort,” Ephrata coach PJ Anderson said. “Toppenish is always tough. We gave ourselves chances but fell a little short. It was an exciting dual. Both teams refused to give anything up, and that led to some great competition. This was a great dual for us leading into the post season. We have this weekend off and then we prepare for districts.”
Quincy 51, Prosser 15
PROSSER — A full Quincy lineup helped propel the Jacks to a resounding 51-15 win at Prosser last night to wrap up their regular season.
Four matches weren’t held due to forfeits by Prosser and Quincy managed to take six of the 10 competitions that hit the mat last night and managed to make plenty of noise with the post season just around the corner.
Manny Ybarra (135-pounds), Keaton Webley (160-pounds), and Baldo Valdovinos (189-pounds) all recorded six points each with pin victories to propel the Quincy cause.
Justin Clifton (119-pounds), Ben Horning (152-pounds), Beck Webley (171-pounds), all recorded narrow decision victories to cap off the Quincy scoring.
“Our team started off slow by Manny got us kick started and then Breck had a great match,” Quincy coach Greg Martinez said. “Heading into districts I hope to have the kids rested and ready to rock and roll.”
