Thanks given for help with memorial
MOSES LAKE — On the evening of Jan. 3, 2010, the Grant County Deputy Sheriffs Association lost more than a member – we lost a friend, a partner, and a father. Since that time, a group of many people worked day and night to create a ceremony that would honor Deputy Bernard and his family. On Monday, Jan. 11 at noon, we mourned the loss of our friend.
In the seven days between Deputy Bernard’s death and his funeral service, I was awestruck by the support shown by the citizens and businesses, both in and out of Grant County. I wish I could greet and thank each one of you personally for your donations and services, but there are far too many. Some donors asked to remain anonymous, and I will honor that request, but still want to say — Thank You.
Some groups are too big to not be recognized specifically. I will note you below and hope to contact you in person. Some felt they had nothing to offer but wanted to do something, so they gave time. Each moment of your support was felt — Thank you.
From the lady who offered to care for our pets while we attended the memorial, to the businesses that donated hundreds or thousands of dollars in services, venues, transportation and other needs, the support kept pouring in day after day, big and small — Thank you.
From those who stood in the cold along the procession route, who stopped your cars and waited as over 100 patrol cars passed, to those who send cards, flowers and monetary donations — Thank you.
To Big Bend Community College, who provided the gym, moved classes, closed parking lots, and met every one of our many needs — Thank you.
To the Fire Fighters who hung the huge flags, assisted with the organization and planning of the ceremony, and offered your support in the loss of a fallen partner — Thank you.
To the many Law Enforcement agencies from across the state and Canada that covered calls, provided watch for the casket and family, or traveled to honor Deputy Bernard at the ceremony — Thank you.
To Governor Gregoire, who skipped the first day of session to attend the ceremony and gave a touching speech — Thank you.
Last but not least, to the Behind the Badge Foundation, who provided the leadership and guidance to the men and women who put together the service of our fallen partner. Without you, our friend would not have been honored they way he was. Unfortunately, your services are practiced and well honed. You offer your assistance with confidence and compassion — Thank you.
Over the week I have witnessed an outpouring of support I could not have previously imagined. Many gave not knowing Deputy Bernard personally, but to what he stood for. Deputy Bernard did not do his job for recognition, none of us do, but in times like this it feels good to know that the community as a whole supports our efforts and the supreme sacrifice of a few.
