MOSES LAKE — The highly successful Moses Lake Pirates’ intern program returns for another go-around as the 2010 year slowly approaches.

The program now seeks interested persons to express their intentions of joining and the Pirates are accepting applications for the program which offers an opportunity for current college students and recent college graduates to gain experience working in the sports industry.

Those interested may wish to do it to receive college credit or simply to enjoy the experience.

“Our interns are usually students majoring in sports management or broadcast journalism,” team owner Brent Kirwan said.  “We do Internet broadcasts, some interns work the gate, inning promotions or beer sales. Others write stories and set up or tear down.”

He adds that while a background in business, sport management or broadcast journalism is helpful due to the variation in potential jobs.

Interns arrive from colleges throughout the country with some coming from the Columbia Basin-area but who attend college in other locations.

Generally, interns report in late May and work through mid-August or when league playoffs conclude.

Before the season begins, interns may be given administrative duties with team officers, participate in fundraising or public relations work.

Once the season starts, duties might include announcing, producing play-by-play for the online production, writing articles for the Web site or newspapers or welcoming fans at the gate and concession stands.

The internship program  provides an opportunity to combine book learning with real world experience.

The Pirates’ programs are specifically designed to make use of the talent and motivation displayed by each intern.

Reliable transportation is required and host family housing is available.
