Hopes alive for 60-and-over softball team

MOSES LAKE — Locals involved in a Spokane 60-and-under softball league are looking for enough players to create a Moses Lake-based team for the upcoming season.

The Spokane Senior Softball League was comprised of seven teams last season which were comprised mostly Spokane-based clubs.

Len Friedlander was the only Moses Lake resident to participate but he hopes to drum up enough support and interest to enter a team comprised of solely players from his hometown.

“If we can’t get enough players for a team the guy I play with is going to make up two teams so we should be able to play,” Friedlander said.

Friedlander would try to find a sponsor for the team but in the event one was unavailable he said the entry fee is still to be determined.

Western Wood, the team Friedlander played on last season, made the jump from last to first place during a surprising campaign.

“Like one time last year it was pretty hot and we were sitting in the dugout and one of the guys said, ‘wow, we got to play another game,’” Friedlander said. “I asked him what would you be doing right now and he said ‘oh probably watching a game.’ So I said, ‘exactly.’ It doesn’t make us young again but it give us a chance to compete against guys our age. Some guys never grow up and I’m one of them. It’s nice to play ball with guys your age.”’

Ganes consist of Wednesday night doubleheaders at Franklin Field, located on the north side of Spokane.

Pitching height is 6-12 feet and other rules are adopted as the league sees fit. Senior Softball USA does not have the run through rule for any of their tournaments but that rule could be left in place for the league if they so choose.
