Othello pins big defeat on Tigers
OTHELLO — Othello came out ready to rumble and the Ephrata Tigers fell by the wayside to the host Huskies 57-18 last night in Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) wrestling action.
Nine pin victories played out during the match with Othello coming out on the positive side of such results six times.
Othello was aided by an additional two forfeit wins.
“It was a lot of pins tonight,” Huskies’ coach Ruben Martinez said. “We got a few pins we didn’t think we were going to get which were a bonus. We had an idea where we were going to win but those were nice. We looked pretty tough today.”
The six Othello pin wins came via, Gilbert Villa (second round over Benny Carter at 103-pounds), Lucas Garza (second round over Tyler Childs at 119-pounds), Matt Jordan (first round over Kyle Pohle at 130-pounds), Amando DeLeon (second round over Chris Davidson at 171-pounds), Daniel Walker (second round over Jacob Green at 189-pounds), and Joey Gomez (second round over Curtis Treiber at 215-pounds).
The DeLeon-Davidson result came out at once surprising but on the other hand not too shocking either.
“Those two wrestled at the Sundome Tournament,” Martinez said. “Davidson is pretty tough but Amando’s wrestling very well right now. It was a close match until he was able to catch him on his back. It’s good to see him start pinning people which Amando hadn’t done much of before.”
Ephrata received pin wins at 125-pounds from Anthony Bush (first round over Leon Beltran), 160-pounds from Andrew Sconce (second round over Anthony Villareal), and at 285-pounds by way of Mitchell Browns win over Michael Hawk (first round).
Othello’s Reuben Lopez took a 4-3 decision at 140-pounds over Kurt Nygard.
“We knew that was going to be a tough one,” Martinez said. “Those two wrestled some close matches last year. Reuben wrestled smarter this time. It was tied 3-3 with 25 seconds left and he was able to get an escape to win. Kurt wrestled really tough.”
Matthew Melo won at 145-pounds for Othello with a 10-6 win over Preston Hendrickson and the Tigers’ Robert Motzkus fell 6-4 to Eddie Garza at 152-pounds.
“We did not meet Othello’s intensity,” Ephrata coach PJ Anderson said. “We waited until the third round to start wrestling in many cases. We got to Post this weekend and then we will get back to work next week.”
Othello on the other hand took some time off of work on Wednesday to reap the benefits some 24 hours later.
“We gave the kids a day of rest since we looked a little beat up,” Martinez said. “We looked tired in our match Tuesday so we decided to let our varsity have some time to relax. It looks like it paid off because they came out like madmen.
“We’re peaking at the right time but we still have some work to do,” Martinez added.
Quincy 46, Wapato 18
QUINCY — With three matches left in CWAC competition the Quincy Jacks broke through Thursday night with a 46-18 win over visiting Wapato.
The win moved Quincy to 2-4 in the league.
“I feel good,” Quincy coach Greg Martinez said. “Its good to get some success and the kids are working on the things we are showing them in practice. It’s nice to see that settling in.”
Pin victories were recorded by Gary Benitez (130-pounds, second-round pin) and Ben Horning (152-pounds, third-round pin).
Justin Clifton scored a 20-5 technical fall at 125-pounds and Breck Webley dominated in a 16-0 technical fall victory at 171-pounds.
“Anytime you are able to tech an opponent it shows domination,” Martinez said. “But not allowing someone to score on you without the pin indicates a basically, perfect match..”
Keaton Webley took a 16-11 win at 160-pounds and Manny Ybarra managed a 3-0 win at 135-pounds.
“We got off of our back well and the kids wrestled well,” Martinez said. “When the kids had a chance to get a pin they managed to get them. It was nice to see us on the other side of the coin.”
Warden 63, Connell 15
WARDEN — Wrapping up the home portion of the 2009-2010 schedule, the Warden Cougars dismantled visiting Connell 63-12 last night.
The Cougars registered six pins out of the 11 matches that took place while also being gifted three forfeit wins.
J.P. Martinez, Bianca Hernandez, Cesar Rangel, Scott Henderson, Sam Suarez, and Araceli Cuevas all managed pins against their South Central Athletic Conference rivals as the season heads into its final couple weeks of action.
Javier Tapia took a 4-2 decision at 103-pounds and Hector Camacho won 12-9 at 145-pounds to round out the scoring for Warden.
“The pieces are all coming together,” Warden coach Rick Bowers said. “The kids are working really hard. Right now we’re pin happy. We had Connell and Ki-Be come in this week and both are good programs. We didn’t take them lightly so we were really ready.”
