WENATCHEE — After a run of participating in some prestigious wrestling tournaments as of late, the Moses Lake Chiefs got back to business against Big Nine competition.

Woe to those who stood in the Chiefs’ way.

Moses Lake went back into league competition mode on Thursday night with a double-dual at Eastmont High School and pounded both the hosts (59-9) and Richland (60-9).

Chiefs’ coach Jamie Wise said his team really showed their ability to take the step back from tough tournament atmospheres to handle their Big Nine business at hand.

“They stayed focused and we talk about that and maintaining consistency in performance,” Wise said. “They came out and wrestled really well.”

Against Easmont numerous Chiefs recorded wins including. Tanner Long (103-pounds) via first-round pin, Hayden Wise (112-pounds) by 7-1 decision, Brad Fox (119-pounds) by a 16-0 technical fall, Omar Suarez (125-pounds) through second-round pin, Colton Cole (130-pounds) by third-round pin, Jordan Bishop (135-pounds) won by first-round pin, Ricco Moreno (140-pounds) by 8-3 decision, Chris Lacelle (160-pounds), with a narrow 4-3 decision, Logan Phelps (171-pounds) by second-round pin, Edwin Torres (189-pounds) through a 10-8 decision, Brian Chamberlain (215-pounds) in a first-round pin, and Kabe Fluaitt (285-pounds) by first-round pin.

Coach Wise used some of his junior varsity wrestlers during this contest and received solid returns.

“Some of them did very well and some are behind and have some work to do,” he said. “We have to jumble the lineup a little bit to keep kids within their match count. Overall they took care of business.”

Taking on a more competitive Richland squad, Moses Lake through out a majority of the varsity lineup on the mat and the result was a second convincing win on the night.

Beau Gleed (103-pounds) won 3-0, David Perales (125-pounds) recorded a first-round pin, Cole (130-pounds) registered a third-round pin, Bishop (135-pounds) won by a 6-4 decision, Nico Moreno (140-pounds) flew out to a first-round pin, Nathan Martinez (145-pounds) won 12-10, Hector Zavala (152-pounds) closed out a 6-4 win, Phelps (171-pounds) got a first-round pin, and Levi Walpole (285-pounds) ended up with a second-round pin.

Moses Lake also earned three forfeit wins.

“Richland is a much tougher team and we wrestled a lot better so it was a good match for us,” Wise said.

Othello 44, East Valley 18

YAKIMA — Othello’s wrestling Huskies showed their bite is as sharp as their bark is loud.

Despite getting off the bus from a lengthy trip to Yakima, Othello put the pound to their hosts as they took a 44-18 win at East Valley last night.

Huskies Anthony Barrera (103-pounds) won via 8-4 decision, Lucas Garza (112-pounds) took a first-round pin,  Matt Jordan (130-pounds) took a 5-3 decision, Reuben Lopez (135-pounds) won a 14-12 decision, Eduardo Montes (140-pounds) won 16-10, Eddie Garza (152-pounds) took a 4-0 win, Amando DeLeon (160-pounds) captured a 17-2 technical fall, Daniel Walker (171-pounds) scored a first-round win, Joey Gomez (215-pounds) registered a second-round pin.

Jordan beat Konner Hopkins and the victory could help the Husky during the district seeding meeting since both are highly regarded.

Othello coach Rueben Martinez said they would both will end up wrestling at 125-pounds at districts.

The same scenario may play out for Lopez who took down Mason Yates in a tight contest and the two could face each other at districts in the 135-pound weight class.

“We’re starting to pick it up and we need that going into this weekend,” Martinez said. “ But we are doing really well as a team and I can’t complain with the kids picking it up and being aggressive the way they are.”

Othello travels to the Pacific Northwest Classic at University High in Spokane starting today and runs through Saturday.

Selah 52, Quincy 14

SELAH — Hosts Selah continued letting the CWAC know they are a team to reckon with as they knocked down Quincy 52-14 on Thursday.

Manny Ybarra (135-pounds) won via technical fall, Baldo Valdovinos (215-pounds) recorded a pin, while Daniel Herrera (285-pounds) won via decision to record the only team points for Quincy.

“There were some good matches and some bright moments,” Quincy Jacks coach Greg Martinez said. “But overall we showed our overall youth and inexperience.”
