Ivy Catherine Scott Brotherton
Ivy Catherine Scott Brotherton, 99, longtime Moses Lake resident, died December 17, 2010, in hospice care.
Ivy was born on November 26, 1911, in Seattle, Washington, the daughter of Norway immigrants Olaf Peter Scott, a mining engineer, and Marie Catherine Lubben Scott, who operated the family dairy farm at Dugualla Bay on Whidbey Island. Ivy was the last surviving sibling of her family. She grew up on the farm with her brothers, Peter, Walt, Ralph and George, and sisters Thelma and Dorothy.
After completing courses in business, she married Wilber E. (Bill) Brotherton III in the summer of 1940, and they settled at home in Ellensburg, Washington. For the next 20 years, Bill operated the W. Brotherton Seed Company and Ivy brought up their five children, Wilber, Scott, Sonny, Jerome and Mary Lou.
In 1960 the family moved to Moses Lake, where Ivy worked as an administrator and bookkeeper for Brotherton Seed in the next four decades. During her 70 year marriage, Ivy’s family and work sustained the central focus of her life. Bill and Ivy also enjoyed extensive travels to Europe, New Zealand, and the places where Brotherton Seed met clients and customers.
She cherished happy times with nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ivy always provided a comfortable and welcoming home and hospitality for friends and family on many memorable holidays with her kindness, generosity, grace and warmth. Her bright spirit will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
She is survived by her husband Bill, her children Wilber (Kristy) Brotherton, Jerome (Sharon) Brotherton, and Mary Lou Brotherton, all of Moses Lake; son Richard Sonny Brotherton of Orland, California, and many beloved nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Scott Nelson Brotherton.
Ivy’s family would like to express appreciation to her caregivers, especially to Pam Merkeley. Kayser Chapel is in care of arrangements.
A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
