WARDEN - Opening league play against one of the perennial powers in the Central Washington South 2B may not have been ideal for the Warden Cougars.
It almost ended up a nightmare for White Swan in the long run.
The Cougars took White Swan to the finish line last night before falling short in a 67-62 loss but not before putting a scare in the consistent state participants.
"We really played with them tonight," Warden head coach Wes Richins said.
They showed they could also beat them by coming out strong to take a 22-15 lead after the first quarter.
"We shot really well and hit three three-pointers," Richins said. "But they were hanging around. They have a lot of quickness and ran the floor really well against us. Their pressure gave us some problems and we got a little cold."
White Swan would make a big run in the second quarter to take a 34-30 lead at halftime.
The Cougars (1-5, 0-1) wouldn't go away either and they would soon even things up at 45 after three quarters of play.
"We came out and made some adjustments trying to slow it down and make it more deliberate," Richins said. "We didn't take care of the ball that well and still had a lot of turnovers."
In the fourth quarter the teams traded runs and the Cougars put themselves in a position to win but couldn't overcome free throw shooting woes as they went only 9-for-16 from the foul line.
"We left a lot of points on the board," Richins said. "We cut it to three and had an opportunity to tie it up but we couldn't get a shot. So it was closer than the score shows."
Marcelo Pruneda scored 14 points for Warden, while Ty Jesse added 13 points, and Conrad Ruge and Victor Flores each finished with 11 points.
Wing Lawrence Fiander led White Swan with 29 points including 14 in the fourth quarter.
