Vancouver: city entertainment meshed with natural beauty only a cheap flight away

| August 31, 2010 2:00 PM

Few cultural centers offer the proximity to natural beauty as Vancouver. Whether you are into the arts or can't get enough of outdoor adventures - or both -- you won't be lacking options in this city. Don't waste time looking into finding some Vancouver cheap flights, as a jam-packed vacation awaits you.

City attractions

Known as Hollywood North, Vancouver ranks behind only New York and Los Angeles for film production in North America. So while you are strolling through the city you might see cameras or recognize some landmarks from your favorite movies. The Vancouver Film Festival, which occurs each September, is one of the most prominent festivals in North America. If you are into independent films, check out one of the offerings at the Vancity Theatre on your visit.

Granville Island features a robust public market, as well as numerous niche shops, art galleries and restaurants. From the island, you'll have a great view of the city's marina and downtown skyline.

Stanley Park, which is directly west of downtown on a peninsula, is one of the most picturesque urban parks in North America. It is slightly larger than Central Park in New York and its trees have remained largely untouched. Trees that are hundreds of years old and more than 250 feet tall are common in the park. The park features more than 120 miles of trails, including bike trails, and multiple beaches.

Further afield

Whistler, one of the most popular ski villages in the world and home to many events during the 2010 Winter Olympics, is less than a two-hour drive north of Vancouver. In addition to the winter skiing, mountain biking and hiking opportunities abound in this mountainous village. As with most ski villages, there is no lack of charming shops and restaurants if you feel like admiring the natural beauty in the midst of modern comforts.

Wilderness comes quick on the northern edge of Vancouver, as the city is bordered by a number of Provincial Parks. Visit www.bcparks.com if planning a wilderness adventure is something you might be interested in.

You can also explore greater Vancouver in interesting ways. You can hop a ferry to Vancouver Island that weaves through the gorgeous rocky islands of the Strait of Georgia. There's a chance you might see killer whales on your ride. Book early because space is hard to come by when the season is right.
