Look up - way up - and catch cheap flights to Las Vegas

| August 31, 2010 2:00 PM

Things are looking up in Las Vegas - and you should be, too. That's because there are so many things to see up, and sometimes, way up.

Even as you're flying into the airport on one of the many cheap flights offered to Vegas, the ground level of the Strip is nowhere near as interesting as the towering Eiffel Tower, the Stratosphere Tower or even the beam blazing the night sky from the Luxor - all of which are viewable from the plane.

The tallest location in Vegas is the Stratosphere Tower, which stands 1,149 feet tall, and has the tallest observation deck in the United States. From this deck on a clear desert day, you can easily see all the lights, glitz and glamour of the Strip, view the surrounding Las Vegas city skyline and even watch Las Vegas cheap flights taking off and landing at McCarran International Airport.

For those who can stomach heights, four rides sit on top of the Stratosphere - the Sky Jump, which is a controlled free fall of 800 feet, the Big Shot, which does the opposite and shoots riders up to 1,081 feet above the Strip, the X-Scream which teeters riders over the edge of the tower and Insanity, the Ride, which not only stretches out over the edge, but then spins riders. And if you're on the ground looking up, you might want to avoid standing directly under the spinning Insanity.

At the other end of the Strip, the skyline of New York towers over you, highlighting the Empire State Building and the Chrysler building, with a roller coaster called the Manhattan Express connecting everything together. Also standing tall is a replica of the Statue of Liberty.

If you don't have a kink in your neck yet, make sure you visit the middle of the Strip, where the Bellagio fountains feature a dazzling display of water dancing to music. The free show happens each hour, depending on winds, and as the sun sets, lights are added to give a different ambiance to the setting.

Make sure you pack comfortable shoes for your trip, because the Strip is around 4 miles long, and there are sights to look up at almost every step of the way. Make your travel plans quickly and easily with online searches like Travelocity, where you can search for Las Vegas cheap flights and hotels at discounted prices.
