MOSES LAKE - A Grant County infant recently died of Whooping Cough.
The health district received a report Wednesday from Seattle Children's Hospital confirming the infant had Whooping Cough, also known as Pertussis, according to the Grant County Health District.
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of this baby," stated Dr. Alexander Brzezny, Grant County health officer. "Our hearts go out to the family during this very difficult time."
A second case of Whooping Cough was confirmed in Grant County. The child is recovering from the illness at home.
Both cases are being investigated by the health district.
Typical cases of Whooping Cough begin with runny noses that last one to two weeks and a cough, and are followed by weeks to months of rapid coughing fits that sometimes end with a whooping sound.
The Grant County Health District reminds residents:
• Pertussis is a vaccine preventable disease
• Children should get five DTaP vaccinations between two months of age and when they start school
• Because immunity from Pertussis vaccine or disease wears off, family members and caregivers of infants should make sure they are up to date with their Pertussis vaccinations
• To protect their babies, women should get the DTaP booster before, during or immediately after pregnancy
• All healthcare workers and childcare providers should be fully immunized for Pertussis
• The DTaP booster shot is available and recommended for people 11-64
• DTaP vaccine is required for sixth grade school entry
