Driver, bicyclist collide

SOAP LAKE — A motorist and bicyclist collided on state Route 28 in Soap Lake Thursday afternoon.

SOAP LAKE - A motorist and bicyclist collided on state Route 28 in Soap Lake Thursday afternoon.

Andrew Hayes, 62, Soap Lake, was in the middle turn lane of the highway on a bicycle, the Washington State Patrol reported. He reportedly attempted to make a right turn onto Grant Road and struck the left side of an eastbound driver.

Hayes was transported to Columbia Basin Hospital and later airlifted to Central Washington Hospital for treatment to head injuries.

Vera M. Walker, 80, Quincy, was the passing motorist. She was driving a 2002 Chrysler Sebring. She did not report sustaining any injuries.

The state patrol reported the accident was caused due to Hayes allegedly making an illegal turn.

Citations have not been issued.

Reported damage was minor.
