Tips for choosing a focal point for your space

| August 19, 2010 2:00 PM

When planning a room redesign, the right focal point is probably the most important design element you need. A room's focal point is usually what people notice first, and it can determine their opinion about your room.

Interior designers use several secrets to choose a space's focal point that you can implement in your own redesign. Utilize these tips when trying to decide:

* Choose something you want to look at - If it's going to be your room's focal point, you are going to have to look at it often. Be sure to choose something you will enjoy seeing every time you enter the space. Avoid things that you will get sick of or that will become out of date quickly.

* Choose something with a meaning - By choosing something with meaning for you, you are more likely to enjoy looking at it often. By selecting something with positive memories for you, you have the benefit of feeling warm and nostalgic every single time you look at it.

* Choose something that captures the room's theme/mood - When choosing a focal point it only makes sense to choose something that incorporates the theme and mood of the space. Decide exactly how the piece makes you feel, and how you want people to feel when in your space. By matching the focal point's mood to the mood you are hoping to achieve, you will most likely be successful.

* Choose something unique and artistic - By implementing a piece of artwork that is unique and visually interesting, it can become a focal point in the room and of the conversation. By choosing a piece of art, you can convey your personal taste and help reinforce the space's mood.

* Choose something with a contrasting color - This is the most daring option. By choosing a focal point that contrasts your room's color scheme, you are risking your entire interior design. When choosing your contrasting piece, it is important it doesn't detract from the overall design of the room. The point of a contrasting piece is to make a bold artistic statement, and to add life to your decor.

Some other ideas for creating a focal point in your room include painting one wall a different color than the rest, showcasing unique architecture, focusing on a fireplace or some other permanent fixture, or simply buying a statement rug.
