Cellphone infractions issued in Moses Lake

| August 16, 2010 1:13 PM

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Police Department is actively enforcing the new cellphone law.

As of Wednesday, police issued 73 infractions to drivers talking on their cellphones, stated police Chief Dean Mitchell.

“The new law, which went into effect June 10, requires motorists to utilize a hands-free device when driving,” he explained. “Apparently some believe the police department is not enforcing the new law. Be assured we are.”

Mitchell explained driving while using cellphones or texting significantly reduces a driver’s attention to the roadway, resulting in collisions.

“We strongly encourage motorists to invest in a hands-free device, or pull safely off the roadway to utilize cellphones,” he stated.

A cellphone infraction is $124.
