CONGRESSIONAL RACE

Reader dislikes traditional election tactics

I am fully aware of Americans' anger over just about every issue right now, but rash comments lacking thoughtful consideration only fuel the problems. In the 4th Congressional candidate statements, Rex Brocki said one of his top three goals is "Introduction of my own ‘Clean Slate Act of 2011.' which will repeal everything Congress has passed since 1900;..." Immediately two thoughts came to my mind: first, that as a woman I would not have the right to vote, since women only gained the right to vote at the national level in 1920; second, that we would be going backwards in the area of child labor laws.

All candidates mentioned job growth/creation, one going so far as to say "tens of thousands." I have lived in large urban areas all my life before coming to Moses Lake. I love it here, the relaxed friendly atmosphere with room to breathe. So, I picture tens of thousands of workers along with their family members and start to see urban sprawl - just like my native Philadelphia or Seattle/King County. And expansive growth brings with it additional problems for communities - additional schools, road upgrades, more firefighters and police - all tax payer supported entities - whether this work is done by public workers or contractors.

Like most Americans, I have grown weary of rhetoric, rash statements, and finger pointing. Where are the qualities of integrity, an honest and deep discussion of the issues and a sincere listening to other points of view? Candidate Mary Edwards mentions the Constitution. It is not un-American to have a different opinion, which is anyone's God given and Constitutional right.

My hope is that candidates will stop resorting to the usual shallow emotionalism and engage in mature and honest dialog.
