Do you need extra auto insurance for the business equipment in your car?

Here's a question that comes up often for people who do a lot of driving as part of their job. Do I need extra insurance for the laptop, copy machine and other equipment I carry with me in the car?

The quick answer - probably not. The equipment you're carrying is likely already protected, either through your employer's business insurance coverage, or if you're self-employed, by your auto insurance, renters, or home insurance policy. Many home and renters insurance policies include a certain amount of coverage for home office equipment, and will offer protection even if the equipment leaves your home.

Of course, the more expensive your equipment is, the more likely you are to take great care of it. That should include checking your policy's coverage limits to be sure your investment is completely protected.

It's always a good idea to talk to your agent when you have questions about car insurance rates to make sure you have a good handle on your coverage and limits. Asking the right questions can save you both money and frustration in the long run.

Here are some good questions people who drive their own vehicle for work should consider asking when comparing auto insurance quotes:

1. Am I getting all the discounts that my auto insurer offers? Among the most common discounts available, a safe driver discount, a discount for cars that have safety features like anti-lock brakes and an alarm system, a good student discount, a discount for driving an economy car, etc. Log on to www.Allstate.com for more options.

2. What coverage options do I need most? If you're at fault in an accident that's covered by your policy, and other people (or property) are injured or damaged, liability coverage helps protect you from the cost of these damages.

If a driver with little or no insurance damages your car, or injures you or someone riding with you, the uninsured/underinsured coverage option can help cover repairs and expenses. (This is subject to certain limitations, however, so check your individual policy, or talk to your agent for more details.)

3. Additional coverage options can boost convenience and peace of mind, whether it's with towing and labor-cost coverage, rental car reimbursement coverage, sound system coverage, or Tape/CD coverage. The choice is yours.
