| April 20, 2010 9:00 PM

BEVERLY — A 17-year-old Renton male was shot in the forearm Saturday morning while camping at the Beverly sand dunes.

Nathan Eric Craton, 18, Puyallup, was arrested for assault in the first degree.

Shortly before 6 a.m., Grant County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a physical altercation leading to shots fired, Chief Deputy Courtney Conklin explained Monday.

“Upon arrival it was learned that a group of 18- to 20-year-old (people) from the Puyallup area had set up camp the night before and had been drinking throughout the night,” he stated. “During the early morning hours an argument ensued in one of the tents. Evidently an altercation ensued and Nathan armed himself with a small handgun.”

One shot was fired.

The victim was transported to Quincy Valley Hospital by a private vehicle.

Craton reportedly fled the scene on foot. He was located in the sand dunes about five hours later and was arrested.

The incident remains under investigation.
